Astros Hold News Conference

At 4 PM Central Standard Time, the Astros hold a news conference at Minute Maid Park to announce the expected signings of Carlos Lee and Woody Williams.  Lee gets $100 million for 6 years and Williams gets $12.5 million for 2 years plus incentives and a club option for 2009.

Lol..I actually had halfway inside knowledge that a Williams deal was done before Turkey-Day. I just wasn’t sure if they’d announce both deals together or wait a day or two to announce Woody’s signing. He is a lifelong Astro fan and it seems like we’re building a team full of hometown guys…Clemens, Pettitte, Williams, Backe, Berkman, Albers, Sampson…all are Houstonians. Biggio might as well be considered an honorary Houstonian. Adam Dunn has said he’d like to be back home next year too…if the Astros manage to pry away Scott Kazmir and Carl Crawford from the Devil Rays in a couple of years, they would rival the Braves for guys from the local area.

On that theory, Estrada, who grew up in Hayward, in SF’s East Bay needs to be with the Giants. And they could use him because Mike Matheny probably wn’t cme back from post-concussion syndrome.

Byrnes and Estrade to the Giants for whomever! Maybe they’ve got someone born in AZ they could trade.

But if I were the D’Backs, I’d be interested in your suggestion of Estrada for Buchholz. The D’Backs need the pitching.

But do you really want a guy who strikes out as often as Adam Dunn?

I don’t honestly think the Astros will be able to get Kazmir or Crawford–would cost too much in prospects. Dunn wants to come home but not sure if the Astros would have a place for him on the roster unless Scott bombs out. Lee will still be in LF and Berkman at 1B.

I just thought it was kinda funny in a way that besides Oswalt the Astros 2007 rotation could be all native Houstonians.
